Criminal Defense

Our St. Johns County criminal defense lawyers have the experience and skills to help individuals accused of committing a crime. We provide free consultations to discuss your charges, particular circumstances, background, the criminal court process, and our opinion of what to expect in your case. We are straight to the point and bluntly honest when it comes to discussing your possible resolutions. We look for your legal arguments and also any mitigation in your personal circumstances that can help in the negotiation of the best possible plea offer from the state. Then, we review that plea offer and the state’s evidence with our clients for the client to decide whether to accept that offer or proceed to trial. Our criminal defense attorneys based in St. Johns County are here to help if you have been accused of committing a crime, including any of the following:

Wills, Trusts and Estates

Alyssa Shorstein has been drafting estate plans and handling probate/trust administrations for clients since 2009 when she opened her own firm. At the University of Florida Law School, she earned an additional Certificate in the area of Estates & Trusts Practice. She prides herself on providing estate plans and the peace of mind that comes with the knowledge that you made sure you did everything you could for your family.

  • Estate Planning
For Estate Planning, Alyssa Shorstein, our experienced St. Johns County estate planning attorney, works with her clients to create a plan that works the best for each client’s needs. In her initial consultation, she will explain the different estate plan options, and after getting to know the individual’s circumstances and wishes, provides her opinion on what would best suit them. Once the client selects their plan, then we schedule their review and signing appointments. Alyssa does an in-depth review of each document before sending the documents home with the client to review on their own, and then at the next appointment goes over any questions or changes from their at-home review. She ensures that her clients understand and are confident in their documents before they sign them.
  • Probate
If a loved one has passed away and there are assets in their individual name or in their trust’s name, then those assets will need to be properly administered, or passed on, to the beneficiaries. In your consultation, Alyssa will explain the steps that will be needed in your specific situation. Then, as your attorney, she will be there step by step along the way until the process is completed. At times, these administrations can contain arguments within them between the administrators and beneficiaries causing “estate litigation.” Alyssa Shorstein, as our experienced St. Johns County probate attorney can represent her clients for any estate litigation that arises.

Guardianships: Guardianships of Minors and Guardian Advocacies

At Shorstein and Lee, we represent clients for these two types of guardianships. A guardianship for a minor is required with a minor inherits funds or property that has a value over $15,000.00. A guardianship advocacy is a streamlined guardianship process for parents of children who are turning 18 and who are developmentally or otherwise disabled in a way that means they cannot handle their own affairs. We help families through the paperwork and court process as well as the continuing required annual filings. If you need help with one of these types of guardianships, call us today at (904) 829-3035 for a consultation.
